My dad found a RES in a backyard with an empty/dried out pond, wandering close to another dead RES in the yard. My dad was working on the roof of the house with the backyard for the new owners - the turtles had been left behind when the previous owners had moved out, the pond not kept up with, etc. So my dad tried to find out what the previous owner was going to do with it. He didn't want it.
So my dad took him home, put him in a temporary tank with fresh water and fed him. Now here's the issue. My dad doesn't have the right sized tank, nor does he have a filter. He's been out of a job for about a month and a half now because he severed his foot while dirt biking and has been in and out of hospitals since, with surgeries, etc. He cannot afford to, nor does he have the time to give the proper care this RES requires. I don't have the space or time for him in my home either. Honestly, after finding out about the care and diet they require and trying to help my dad care for him properly, I got yelled at and ignored, so the turtle likely isn't being cared for properly at the moment. First my dad was trying to sell it - it's illegal to do so in Alberta. So then he was trying to find a new home for it for free, because he simply cannot keep up with the turtle any longer. Then the ads get replied to about how THAT is illegal too. Now I'm wondering - how in the world is my dad going to find it a place to go if it's illegal to even try to find it a new home that it would be free to go to? My dad is an idiot who should never own any types of pets. Ever. I'll be the first to admit that. Most of the people in my family are the same way. I'm the only one who actually looks after her pets until they pass on. That said, my dad threatened to release the turtle in the river if it's not gone by winter. I got in a huge fight with him over it. I'm at a loss of what to do. What IS legal for us to do to find this turtle a new home? I want this turtle in experienced care and out of my father's care before he does something truly stupid. I'm at the point where if I ABSOLUTELY have to, I'll take the turtle temporarily JUST to get it away from him until it can go elsewhere. But he's bugging me and bugging me about the fact he hasn't heard from anyone yet, despite the fact it's only been two days. At a loss. Need suggestions. - Sam

It is legal to posses the turtle, but not legal to sell it. So giving it to a home is fine.
the Humane Society has had sliders in the past, it may be your best option to contact them and see if they can take him.

The humane society currently has a RES, I'm sure they'd be okay to take it until they can find a new home. ![]()

Found it somewhere to go. The guy and his wife have a huge pond and a few other RES's so he's going around Friday or Saturday to his new home.
Thanks guys! I had him on kijiji to get the notice out there that he needed a home and someone sent me an email saying it was illegal to distribute them, even for free? Which was why I began reeling for wth to do with him.

you can take them or give them for free with no issues, most people offer them 'free' with a tank to cover their butts

In the context of the Communicable Diseases Regulation, you can reasonably safely assume that "or otherwise distribute" involves increasing the numbers of the species in Alberta. Changing homes doesn't do that. Finding homes for new hatchlings does.

The trend is to post names and numbers of "pets" here. That seems...um...bulky. 23+ species of salamander 28+ families and subfamilies of reptile, amphibian, and arachnid. Only one has a name. The Beast. |

Although it can be argued that the regulation technically covers 'free' under "otherwise distribute", the government usually does not give people any grief unless money is changing hands...they have gone after a few individuals and retailers (they always go after retailers, no matter what) that did the 'buy a tank, get a turtle free' thing.

How it generally works is that they won't do something unless there is a complaint. Then they "have" to do something, because that is their job. When this happens, you'll see if offering for free is considered distribution; provided we are let in on the events.
