The Crowfoot Petland had one for the longest time, but I don't think it's there any longer. He had an amazing temperament.

Wow... a Petland, of all places had one? I never go to the crowfoot one so I wouldn't have known. I used to go to the sunridge one for shiggles when I was in the area because that's the closest one, but now that I live in coventry, I go to that one on occasion.

Both Colombian (Epicrates maurus) and "Brazilian" (Epicrates cenchria) [all five species occur in Brazil] rainbow boas occur in Guyana, and possibly the Amazon rainbow (Epicrates assisi) as well, marginally. The specimen that's been at Crowfoot forever appears to be E.maurus. I have a picture actually...hm...not uploaded though.
Here are the illegal boas in Alberta, per the stickied thread:

"Rainbow boas" seem to be under constant revision. You'll find people referencing between 5 and 12 different subspecies at any given time. I found a more current "master list" online that wouldn't surprise me if it's been revised further since April of this year:
Master List of Rainbow Boa Subspecies E. c. cenchria (“Brazilian”) --(now includes) E. c. gaigei (“Peruvian”) --(now includes) E. c. hygrophilus (“Espirito Santo”) E. c. crassus (“Paraguayan”) --(now includes) E. c. polylepis (“Central highland”) E. c. maurus (“Colombian”) --(now includes) E. c. barbouri (“Marajo Island”) E. c. alvarezi (“Argentine”) E. c. assisi (“Caatinga”) As Andrew pointed out all are technically legal to keep in Alberta, but as for availability and the legality of getting them here might be another story altogether. Gives you more of a starting point to work from though. You may also be interested in some other members of the Epicrates genus, "Boas of the West Indies" which are very interesting (and often cranky). Some of which we see available once in a while: EPICRATES GENUS: E. angulifer - Cuban Boa E. chrysogaster - Turk's Island Boa (3 sub-species) E. exsul - Abaco Island Boa E. fordii - Ford's Boa (3 sub-species) E. gracilis - Haitian Tree Boa (2 sub-species) E. inornatus - Puerto Rican Boa E. monensis - Mona Island Boa (2 sub-species) E. striatus - Haitian Boa (7 sub-species) E. subflavus - Jamaican Boa

Chris, if I'm reading this correctly, all rainbow boas are the same species, but there are five main subspecies encompassing 9 localities?

![]() Ian, that's as far as the most recent info i've found reads. I've seen up to 12 mentioned before but for example the "Central Highland" lumps in Brazilian and Venezuelan localities. Depends how folks want to interpret things I s'pose.
Hyo I think you'll find that some of the others mentioned might be right up your alley as well, they all seem to have that rainbow irridescence. There are a few of these boas in Canada, but very little interest in them and notoriously hard to get feeding. Some just seem to only want to eat lizards. Here's a pic of a preggo Cuban from back East taken in October (photo by RC member Bistrobob): ![]() Roy Stockwell's Haitians from '06 he no longer keeps them, but there are some in Canada Jamaican Boa (photo also by RC member Bistrobob): ![]()
