Biggest advantage of either plastic bins or enclosures is the weight factor.
Ever move around a big stack of wooden caging by yourself?
Not much fun, a big stack of plastic on the other hand can be moved with ease.
I agree the cost is crazy on some of the bins etc. thus why I too still use many "old school" enclosures, Mark

Working with select Colubrids (Corns, Kings, Hybrids etc.) and Australian Pythons (Carpets (X's & morphs), Aspidites etc.)

All stock parasite free and established on F/T prey (unless stated otherwise)

Ever put one of those expensive bins in your hands? As soons as you touch them you know they are worth every penny and will last a lifetime with very little up keep. Neither can be said with a DIY set up.most people also dont want to spend the time to build a nice enclosure or rack. So you are paying for a welder or a skilled person to build the rack or cage.its very easy to do but most people dont have access or the budget for proper tools to build a decent set up.Floor space is floor space. A snake would rather perfer it in a nice rack set up because they feel confined and secure. Ever wonder why ball pythons kept in racks ever have feeding problems vs 15 years ago or vs kept in enclosures?yes if it is an aboreal snake I would definatly say enclosure, or with a small collection. But this is the reptile hobby, not very many people keep a limited number of herps, especially when they have been in it for a few years.to each their own. I personally would rather spend $3000 on an ARS 7030 (30 CB70) that is plug and play than have to build one and replace it every 5 years. Doesnt take long to add up to the prefab racks.

I would feel bad keeping most snakes in cb-70 bins, I am a fan of racks in the sense that they do provide dark closed spaces. I think this is an advantage mostly because it emulates a hybernaculum environment. so naturaly snakes would be comfortable. however no living thing does well doing circles for activity. either offer enough space in a comfortable way to allow some adventure/hunting or dont go with a rack. I hate when people talk about how much easier bins are to clean. who cares! time and effort blah blah. they should be the small factors in your keeping of animals. when you buy an animal you accept the work it takes to provide them a practical but good exsistance. we all to often personify things and project the image of what we want the animals to be to our preception of what they want or need. only that is usually not what the animals really want or need. I use cb-110 bins for bps, that's about 3/4 the floor space most provide for boas. where do you think my ideals are for larger snakes?
