Now that all of our spring show and sales are done, it's time for something a little more on the educational side of things! This year T.A.R.A.S is excited to be hosting the second annual Alberta Reptile Enthusiasts Meeting here in Calgary. We are going to be looking at some of our fascinating native herps, and so far we have an amazing lineup of speakers that will be present.
I'm happy to announce that Kris Kendall, the senior biologist with the Alberta Conservation Association has commited to doing a presentation on Alberta's native amphibians. He is also trying to bring one of our native herps, which if it works out will be a real treat!!
We're also pleased to have Adam Martinson as one of our speakers. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of meeting him, Adam is an incredible young man who has dedicated his life to the research and protection of Albertan snakes, primarily rattlesnakes. T.A.R.A.S has already been helping to fund him, and he has also brought a few of our lucky members on rattlesnake fieldtrips to experience one on one encounters with rattlesnakes in their natural habitat.
Our third speaker is going to be Dr. Anthony Russel, who's impressive background is much too long for me to include here! He is a professor as well as the acting department head here at the U of C, and some of his students include Magdalene Leung and Sabrina Hynes, two of our other friends we have given support to so they can continue in their research. His presentation is going to be on Alberta's lonely lizard, the Greater short-horned lizard (Phrynosoma hernandesi).
And finally we have Dr. Dan Johnson, the Professor of Enviromental Science at the University of Lethbridge speaking about northern scorpions, as well as a couple of our native arachnids including sun scorpions.
This meeting is Free to all current members of both E.R.A.S as well as T.A.R.A.S, so if you dont already have your membership this is yet another amazing oppurtunity to get one! Plus as an added bonus we will be having a fabulous lunch to kick things off, as well as give everyone a chance to meet other fellow hobbyists!!
