What we need:
We have a need for at least three judges, and preferably five or six. No qualifications are required, and membership is not required. Judges may be competition entrants, but may NOT judge a category in which they are entered.
What are the benefits?
Judges receive free admission to both days of the TARAS spring show, but likely only judge on one day. Judges will be provided with the same meal benefits as other Saturday volunteers.
What is required:
Judges will be called upon to judge between the hours of 10:00am and roughly 2:00pm Saturday April 21, 2012. There is the possibility that additional judging will be required before 2:00pm Sunday April 22, 2012.
Judges will be called upon to review all entries in one or more of the following competition entry categories:
Youth (terraria, education, photography, and creative; entrant is under 15)
Student (terraria, education, photography, and creative; entrant is 15 to 25 and is attending school)
Terraria
Education
Photography
Creative Herpetology
One judge has been requested separately, solely to judge live animals. Additional judges will not be required for animals unless the volume of entries demands it. In that case, animal entries will be divided by classification in as balanced a manner as possible.
How is it done?
Each of these categories must be judged in full by at least three people, so as to obtain fair and balanced reviews equally for all entries.
Score sheets, writing materials, clipboards, and identification will be provided. Youth and Student entries may consist of a mixture of Terraria, Education, Photography, and Creative entries, and will thus use score sheets for each of those.
Score sheets have been revised in order to make all categories completely equal in their scoring. All entries may now score up to 100 basic points and up to an additional 20 bonus points. Penalty points have been eliminated. Equal scoring allows all entrants to vie for exactly the same prizes, selection being determined entirely by points and personal choice. Bonus points allow 'pet quality' animals to compete on a more even footing with 'breeder' or 'show' quality animals, and a similar principle applies to all other categorie, which also levels the playing field and allows all categories to compete indirectly against one another for prize selection. Prizes are assigned in this manner because it allows all entrants to compete for what they most want, without having to enter a category in which their abilities may be limited. By excelling at what one does best, chances of the desired prize are increased. It also means that, for example, an outdoor photographer isn't forced to accept a camera she doesn't need or a terrarium she has no interest in.
For information purposes, the five score sheets are provided below. Suggestions are welcome as to how to improve any of these, particularly the assignment of bonus points to non-living entries.
